Bagels are perfect for a quick easy breakfast, or for sandwiches at lunch. There’s nothing better than biting into a bagel fresh out of the oven! Bagels can be sweet or savory, depending on your tastes. I prefer savory, so I make mine with onion, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, and sea salt. You could easily take a sweeter route by adding diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and honey to your bagels.
Recipe for Homemade Bagels
1 1/4 Cup Water
4 1/2 Cups Bread Flour
3 Tablespoons of White Sugar
1 Teaspoons of Sea Salt
2 Tablespoons of Vegetable Oil
1 Tablespoon of Instant Yeast
1 Cup of Honey (Optional)
4 Quarts of Water (For Boiling)
Toppings
1 Teaspoon of Sea Salt or Kosher Salt
2 Tablespoons of Poppy Seeds
2 Tablespoons of Sesame Seeds
2 Tablespoons of Dried Onion Flakes
Instructions for Homemade Bagels
1: Add your 1 1/4 cup of water, flour, sugar, salt, vegetable oil, and yeast in your stand mixer bowl. With the dough hook, mix your batter on low speed for about 8 minutes. After 8 minutes, stretch your dough to make sure that the gluten has fully developed. If the dough breaks immediately, it needs more kneading.
2: Move your dough to an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for about two hours in a warm area.
3: Punch your dough down. Flour a clean surface, and move your dough. Divide your dough into 6 pieces. Take each piece and roll it until it is about 6 inches long. Join the ends.
4: Preheat your oven to 475 Degrees.
5: Bring four quarts of water to a rolling boil. Add your (optional) cup of honey. Drop three bagels in, and wait until they rise to the surface (this will take about a minute). Flip them, and let them boil for an additional minute. Repeat with the last three. Remove bagels from the water with a slotted spoon and place them on a parchment lined baking sheet.
6: Sprinkle with sea salt, poppy seeds, dried onion flakes, and sesame seeds.
7: Bake for 15 minutes, or until browned.
Enjoy!
